Currently, much of our biodegradable waste such as food, garden waste, card and paper is sent to landfill. It is then left to break down, during which time it releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Anaerobic digestion is a treatment that breaks down biomass material in the absence of oxygen, which produces a biogas that can be harnessed to generate electricity and heat; power vehicles or to fire industrial boilers.
As it is possible to co-fire biomass in conventional heat and power stations, biomass is the rational choice concerning an immediate reduction of CO2. Producing renewable energy from cellular material fibre will help tackle climate change, rather than contributing to it. SWR BioEnergy Limited is already involved in exporting over 200,000MT per annum of waste generated from commercial and industrial sites, as well as from municipal refuse collection sites in the form of RDF and SRF. These exports are already responsible for reducing UK landfill requirements, turning environmentally problematic waste into a valuable fuel source for the UK economy.
